Owen's first xmas was low key. Mostly spent napping and eating. Drew and I have been daydreaming about how fun future xmas's will be once Owen is old enough to be excited about it. Owen is getting bigger and stronger everyday. He is really starting to use his hands and push off of our laps with his tiny little legs. He studies our faces for a long time with his big blue eyes. Owen also makes the craziest noises. He mostly grunts and growls like a little bear cub, but will occasionally make a scream that sounds like a baby dinosaur.

Two weeks old...
Two weeks is exactly how long it took for me to stop feeling like a completely insane person.
I would be lying if I said this wasn't hard...but it gets better every day. The lack of sleep has been hardest on me, but Owen will sleep 5 hours in a row now as long as he is snuggled against me in bed. It took me two nights to get over my fear of rolling over in my sleep and suffocating him. Drew and I have been the typical nervous new parents. In the past two weeks we have been to the pediatrician three times, called the nurses at labor and delivery twice and I completely cried on the phone with a woman from la leche league once. Breastfeeding has been difficult but I am bound and determined to stick with it. Owen has a difficult time latching on, and he gets VERY frustrated and starts pinching my nipples if it takes too long. He is an angry little man if he does not get what he wants.
I love my little angry man.

One Week Old
Oh man I love this baby....
He is changing so much everyday.
His cheeks are getting chubbier from all the breastfeeding we are doing (ouch).
Owen is starting to be more aware, look around and stare at whoever is holding him.
He seems freakishly strong for a baby and I have to work very hard at putting a diaper on him. Sometimes I feel like I need 8 more hands to get it done.
Diaper changings are his least favorite thing in the whole world right now.
His favorite thing is falling asleep on someones chest...listening to their heartbeat.
That is mommas favorite thing too.
He is waking up...gotta go.

Sleepy baby land...
The fog is slowly lifting. I hope this entry makes sense...I'm operating on only a few hours of sleep. Its been hard adjusting to no sleep, but totally worth it for all the sleepy cuddle time with Owen. We are all madly in love with him. He is super cuddly and smells SO good.
For those of you that don't know....Owen was born on Wednesday Dec. 3 at 4:52 a.m. He was 7lbs 13 oz and 21 inches long.
I was scheduled for an induction the following day and Owen is such a good baby he came naturally...just in time the night before. A cuban guy Drew works with told Drew to say a prayer over my belly to make the baby come. Drew did this and then we went into town to see a movie to get my mind off the induction. I started getting mild contractions in the movie but thought nothing of it because i had the same the night before. We then went to go eat some mexican food (i was told to eat spicy to kick him out), and my contractions started coming so fast we had to leave once our entrees arrived and made a run for the hospital. We arrived at the hospital at 7p.m. I labored with contractions for four hours, and then received an epidural (which was awesome). Owen arrived shortly after we began pushing. All warm and lovely.
Back to sleepy baby land...I will post more pics when I can.

Owen Baker Vera
Home at last.
We are tired but madly in love with our new baby boy.
I will write more about the birth once the baby jet lag subsides.
I love you guys...thanks for all of the comments.
p.s. drew isn't strangling the baby in last picture. He is using the "milkshake" calming technique. We find it works best if you actually sing the milkshake song by Kelis while doing it.

Baby update...
I went in for my 41 week check up today. The baby has not dropped and my cervix is still closed. I had contractions last night but they were apparently "false labor" because they completely stopped at 7:30 this morning. The doctor wanted me to induce today. We are going to wait and go in tomorrow at 7a.m.
I am bummed about being induced. This is not the way I wanted to go. The doctor told me this is best for the safety of the baby considering that I am already a week overdue. I don't know why my body isn't giving him up. All that matters is that Owen arrives safely. I can not wait to finally meet him.
The doctor said it should take about two full days to induce since we are starting at zero. Then I think they have to watch over the baby for a day or two. So...expect some baby pics by the end of the weekend.

Happy Thanksgiving...
The boys spent the day fishing. Drew was super excited to finally get out on the boat. Susie and I watched The Thorn Birds (meow) while the turkey cooked.
Our little turkey hasn't arrived yet.
I'm thankful I was able to eat turkey dinner at home rather than in the hospital.
Thank you Owen.
You can come out now though....seriously.

40 weeks
Today is our due date.
This picture is a perfect representation of how I feel today.
I am a ball of cranky, uncomfortable moodiness.
Went to the doctor today. Nothing has happened.
The baby has not dropped and my cervix is closed tight.
They made me stay on a heart monitor for thirty minutes to make sure the baby is ok.
He is doing fine. He is super comfy.
I have had a headache since last night. I think that is adding to the cranky.
I'm hoping its hormones but I feel like punching someone for no reason.
My mom and I went to the grocery store after my appointment, and I had a REALLY strong urge to kick this random man while he was kneeling in front of a display.
Seriously...for no reason.
I'm at home drinking a vanilla shake now...feeling much better.

39 weeks...
Today is exactly one week from my due date.
Owen is never coming out.
Went to the doctor today...still no labor progress.
He said I still could go into labor at anytime though.
The belly is ridiculous.
People stare...its pretty funny.
I told Owen he has to try and wait till after Saturday to come.
This is because his mom is a super dork and she really wants to
go see a cheesy vampire movie (twilight) before she goes into labor.

Something very very very special...
My lovely, wonderful (greatly missed) friend Michelle sent me a package. In it was a handmade baby blanket and handmade little knit cap (with ears!!) that mean the world to me. Words can not express how much I love them. I feel like we have talked about Michelle making us baby blankets since we were in high school. I am really very excited to finally have mine. It is soft and lovely, and I will always think of you when Owen is snuggled in it.
In addition to the handmade goodies, Michelle spoiled me by throwing in the cutest elephant, onesie and tshirt that I CAN NOT wait till Owen is big enough to wear. Thank you oh so much.
I love you.

38 weeks
Yup...I'm still pregnant.
I had an exam yesterday and nothing has happened yet.
Owen is quite cozy and doesn't want to come out.
Doctor said he already has an estimated weight of 8 pounds.
They will let me go to 42 weeks before they try to induce.
Hopefully he will come sooner than later.
I would really like to NOT give birth to a 12 pound baby (frightening).
I'm feeling pretty good. I usually have a burst of energy when I wake up in the morning, and then get tired and sluggish thru out the day. Lots of weird pelvic pressure and pain but no contractions yet. I also wake up every two hours thru the night to go to the bathroom. That is really annoying, but its kind of cool how my body already has me in training for nightly feedings.

Just fishing...
Drew caught his first grouper yesterday. It was a beautiful fish but a little too small and had to be thrown back. The tiny fish he is taking off the hook is a mangrove snapper. We catch a bunch of these out of the canal, and then my dad uses them to make the stock for his fish chowder. Super yummy.

37 weeks (Big Momma)
Here is my belly at full term. We are officially ready to go at anytime...although most baby's come week 40 (or later). I gained 5 pounds last week. The nurse made me get on the scale again because she didn't believe that I jumped from 162 to 167 in a week. I officially weigh more than Drew now...that is really weird. The only good thing is that if Drew gets out of line I can sit on him, and there is nothing he can do about it.

Happy Halloween!
These are cupcakes I made for Halloween a few years ago. Drew and i threw a pumpkin carving, chili eating party while living in Austin. I made Drew help me make little marshmallow ghosts till his fingers hurt. I still think they are the cutest damn things in the whole world...even though everyone called them my KKK Kupcakes (Isaac). I repeat they are ghosts...NOT klan members.
I love love love Halloween, but not much going on tonight for the super pregnant. Drew and I will get cozy on the couch and watch An American Werewolf in London (classic) and eat a bowl full of peanut butter cups.
Enjoy your Halloween everyone!!!

Sweet surprises from Sonja...
Oh Sonja.....thank you so much for Owen's box of goodies. I am especially delighted by the sock monkey. I love him. I wanted to show you how happy he is here by letting him run around the banana trees. Marlow really wanted to put one of the monkey's legs in his mouth but I wouldn't let him. This is Owen's sock monkey and I think it will be one of his favorites. I love you!

36 weeks...
The belly is still growing and the weather here has become absolutely beautiful. Not too hot...just breezy and perfect.
Everything went well at our check up this week, and from now on I will go weekly until I pop. The baby is weighing in at 6 1/2 pounds. Mama has put on 32. The doctor said that if i go into labor now they will not try and stop it. Owen is pretty much ready for life on the outside...he is just fattening up and getting those cute baby rolls and dimples. We can't wait.

Fantasy Fest...
All last week has been Fantasy Fest on the island. Fantasy Fest is a week long mardi gras-esque celebration that falls the week before Halloween. Every night is filled with craziness and costumes. We all went down to the big parade on Saturday night. The first picture is me and Susie before the parade began, and the following is us after with all the beads we collected. Susie screamed for beads like a crazy woman. Unfortunately I couldn't' post the majority of the parade pictures because almost every float involved nudity or body paint. (my lovely neices read this blog) It gets pretty crazy down here during fantasy fest. You will have to come see it for your self.
